Scan Tips & Troubleshooting

This tool is intended only for U.S. and Canadian driver licenses / ID cards. Quick Scan checks the main PDF417/AAMVA barcode first and should return promptly on clear photos. Use Ultra Scan only for difficult images.

Use this scanner only for USA/Canada DL or ID documents. Other countries are not supported.

Upload or drag an image for a fast first pass. A successful read will show ✓ READ OK.
If Quick Scan finishes without a result, click Ultra Scan or use Crop PDF417 for a tighter barcode area.
Use Ultra Scan for tilted, sideways, dark, reflective, distant, or combined front/back photos. Ultra Scan now includes an HD rescue pass with extra deskew, sharpening, and adaptive thresholding.
If still not decoded, click Crop PDF417, select only the PDF417 block with a small white border, then click Decode Selected Area.
For small or far-away photos, upload a closer image or a direct crop of the PDF417 block. The PDF417 block should be sharp and occupy a large part of the photo; if it is blurry or too low-resolution, no scanner can reliably recover it.
If scanning still fails, click Clear and upload a sharper, closer, higher-resolution image.
